Cape Cod, MA Attractions

Nauset & Highland Lighthouses. Visit the two historic lighthouses within Cape Cod National Seashore, Highland Light and Nauset Light. Each lighthouse was built at a location served by two earlier generations of light towers that had either been replaced over time or lost to the encroaching sea. Highland Light has stood over Truro since 1857 and Nauset was erected on the shores of Eastham in 1923. Both lights were recently moved away from the eroding cliffs of the Outer Cape, saving the historic lighthouses and preserving them for future generations of visitors. The National Park Service recently took ownership of the lighthouses from the U.S. Coast Guard, and now offers regular tours. www.nps.gov/caco/index.htm

Nantucket Island. First sighted by Norsemen in the eleventh century, and taken by England in 1602, Nantucket Island was originally a place of refuge for the Wampanoag Indians and other regional Indians who traveled to the island to fish and harvest whales. In 1659, Europeans began to settle on the island, drastically reducing the native population. Shortly after 1700, Quakerism began to take root and by the end of the eighteenth century, the island became a refuge for Quakers being persecuted in other areas of the Colony. From the mid-1700’s to the late 1830’s, Nantucket was considered the whaling capital of the world, with as many as 150 ships in service during its peak. The decline of the whaling industry began in 1838 with a decline in the population of sperm whales and the introduction of petroleum. The last whaling ship left Nantucket in 1869, never to return. The tradition of summer vacations in the 1800’s revitalized Nantucket and established the island as an ideal vacation destination. Today the tradition continues and visitors come to see the island’s many attractions like lighthouses, festivals, beaches, sailing and fishing, as well as to enjoy the quiet beauty of the island. www.islandofnantucket.info  [Top]
