Cod National Seashore

The Cape Cod National Seashore comprises 43,608 acres of shoreline, salt marshes, freshwater kettle ponds, uplands, as well as two historic lighthouses. The shore offers many glimpses of life on Cape Cod, including Cape Cod-style houses, wild cranberry bogs, historic building tours, self-guided nature tours, and more. Six swimming beaches, and a variety of picnic areas and scenic overlooks offer ample opportunities to enjoy the relaxation and quiet that has enticed visitors for more than 200 years.

Visit the two historic lighthouses within Cape Cod National Seashore, Highland Light and Nauset Light. Highland Light was constructed in 1857, and Nauset was erected in 1923. Both of these historic lighthouses were recently relocated away from the eroding cliffs of the Outer Cape, saving and preserving them for future generations of visitors. The National Park Service recently took ownership of the lighthouses from the U.S. Coast Guard, and now offers regular tours.

The Great Outer Beach was a favorite of poet, Henry David Thoreau, and modern visitors can trace Thoreau's favorite walking route in the 40 miles of pristine, sandy beach protected within Cape Cod National Seashore. Ranger-guided canoe tours, surfcasting and shell fishing demonstrations are also provided seasonally for a modest fee.
